Standing on the banks of the River Aude, surrounded by an impressive ring of walls, and located in the historic city of Carcassonne is Chateau Comtal, for many centuries an interesting centre of important historic events. At the beginning of the 12th century viscount Bernard-Anton de Trencavel decided to move the family residence from Chateau Narbonnais, to the Narbonne Gate of the Chateau Comtal, at the western end of the rocky spur on the highest point of the city. The new residence was built over the remains of a group of buildings dating from the Roman period as is evidence from the Gallo-Roman mosaics found in the foundation.
